Commissioning of Ashaiman and Bankuman Sewage System

His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, commissioned the simplified sewage facility and treatment plant at Ashaiman Roman Down.

The facility comprises 51 Kilometers of sewer line and a new wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of some 18003 cubic meters per day to serve about four thousand, eight hundred and five (4,805) households in connections in Ashaiman New Town and TDC Quarters serving a total of 26,718 low-income beneficiaries.

President Akuffo Addo said the facilities (in Ashaiman and Bankuman projects) would benefit the people living within the catchment areas of the two (2) Assemblies. He emphasized that the facilities were a clear indication of his government’s commitment to solving the infrastructure needs in the sanitation and water resources sector.

Touching on GAMA Projects, President Akuffo Addo said the project had been successfully executed and further added that additional financing had been sought and approved by the World Bank to extend similar projects to the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area.

“Access to basic drinking water services has increased from 79 percent of the population in 2017 to 87 percent in 2021. Access to improved toilet facilities including public toilets had also increased from 66 percent to 80 percent within the same period”, he added.

Hon. Freda Prempeh, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources commended the former Minister, Mrs. Cecilia Dapaah for implementing sanitation and water initiatives to ensure that all the people in Ghana had access to adequate, safe, and affordable basic water services in their various communities.

Hon. Henry Quartey, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, who also graced the occasion with his presence, in his opening remarks emphasized the need for the citizens to take sanitation and hygiene issues seriously in their areas of jurisdiction. He charged the two Assemblies to take good care of the facilities to ensure value for money.

Other dignitaries that were present at the function include; the Ministers of State, Chiefs, Opinion leaders, Hon. Albert Boakye Okyere Municipal Chief Executive of Ashaiman, Alhaji Saaka Dramani, the Municipal Co-ordinating Director, representatives of political parties, NGOs, media and philanthropist. The overall effect was incredibly stunning, and totally captured the immersive experience that was expected. The staff of ASHMA, together with other stakeholders, performed incredibly well during the program, and I have no doubt this event will be talked about in years to come, as we journey toward reaching a climate-friendly environment.
