ASHMA ENVIRONMENTAL AND SANITATION SUB-COMMITTEE CALLS FOR SANITATION WATCHDOGS AND ACTION AGAINST GBEMI RIVER POLLUTION
The Environmental and Sanitation Sub-Committee of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) has called for the establishment of sanitation watchdogs and firm action against pollution of the Gbemi River.
The Sub-Committee held its meeting on Thursday, 8th October, 2026 at the Assembly Hall to deliberate on sanitation challenges and measures to improve environmental cleanliness across the Municipality.
Key issues discussed included the formation of sanitation watchdogs within the Zonal Councils, the removal of structures obstructing dredging works along the Gbemi River, and measures to address indiscriminate waste disposal.
The Committee resolved to establish sanitation watchdogs within all Zonal Councils to monitor sanitation practices, identify persons responsible for environmental offences and report them to the appropriate authorities for action.
The initiative is expected to yield several benefits including strengthening community participation in sanitation management, improve compliance with sanitation bye-laws, promote behavioural change at the household level, and lead to a cleaner and healthier environment across the Municipality.
It will also reduce the cost of periodic clean-up exercises and enhance the Assembly’s revenue through effective enforcement.
On the Gbemi River, the Committee recommended the demolition of selected structures along its banks that obstruct access and impede effective dredging operations. It further called for punitive measures against individuals who deliberately dump refuse into the river and other public spaces.
The Committee noted that the measures would improve the free flow of water, significantly reduce perennial flooding in flood-prone areas, prevent waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid, protect aquatic life, restore the aesthetic value of the river, and improve overall environmental health and safety for residents living along the waterway.
The Sub-Committee emphasised the need for stronger enforcement of sanitation regulations and sustained community cooperation to prevent pollution and protect water bodies.
