ASHIAMAN MCE, MP & MANAGEMENT INSPECT ONGOING PROJECTS, CALLED ON CONTRACTORS TO EXPEDITE WORK
The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly on Thursday, 13th August 2026, led by the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Freeman Tsekpo, and the Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Ernest Nogbey, inspected a number of road and drainage projects under construction across the municipality.
The team, which included the Municipal Coordinating Director, Ms. Jemima Apedo, assembly members and technical staff, visited the partial reconstruction of the 3.5KM Afariwa-Newtown road, rehabilitation of Fitter Line and High-Tension road (5.5KM), rehabilitation of Christian Village roads (4.5KM), and rehabilitation of Lebanon area roads (5.5KM).
Addressing the media after the inspection, Hon. Dr. Nogbey commended the current government, under President John Dramani Mahama, for delivering more road construction in Ashaiman than any other constituency in Greater Accra within the last year. “Government upon government promised and never delivered. But this government has done a real master work by giving us a number of kilometers of construction which is currently underway,” he stated.
The MP acknowledged the deplorable state of roads in the municipality and called on contractors to accelerate work on the 60km of planned drains, of which 45km has been constructed. He said the remaining works include backfilling, earthworks and application of bitumen to bring relief to residents.
He disclosed that at a meeting with contractors five weeks ago, they were urged to expedite the projects to address flood challenges. However, he expressed disappointment that only the contractor at the Lebanon enclave was on site during the inspection.
The MP specifically called out the contractor on the Afariwa-Newtown-Taifa link, known as “Kabaaka”, for doing “a lazy job” despite receiving the contract at the same time as others. “If he cannot do the work, then he must let us know so that we can tell the minister responsible, so that if he will be changed, then we can change him,” he warned, recommending the termination of the contractor’s contract.
For his part, the MCE, Hon. Freeman Tsekpo, said drainage works in the municipality are about 70% complete. He noted that remaining works include about 1-2km at Lebanon, 800m at Fitter Line, and some outstanding works at Afariwa.
Mr. Tsekpo commended residents for their cooperation in demolishing structures that obstructed road and drain construction. “All properties that were marked for removal to pave the way for drains have been cleared, and contractors have since commenced work at those locations,” he stated.
He disclosed that base works using laterite have begun at Afariwa Junction and bitumen application is expected to start next week. At Newtown Junction, the Assembly is considering either pavement blocks or asphalt to address flooding following the June 29 rains.
The MCE assured residents that government is committed to delivering the roads and appealed for patience. He warned that if contractors fail to improve within one month, the Assembly will hold a press conference to name them and petition the Roads Ministry and Presidency. “Just be patient with the government and this will be done,” he added.
In a similar development, the team inspected the dredging and reconstruction of a collapse under the HYDRO project and a 3-unit classroom at Ashaiman No.4 cluster of schools. The MP disclosed that the classroom block was for ICT education and was his personal project for the community. The No. 5 cluster of school requested for it. Due to unavailability of land the project was sited at No.4 cluster of schools.
Both the MP and MCE said they will continue regular inspections to ensure the projects are delivered on time and to standard. ASHMA/ISD/MEDIA/AUGUST 13TH, 2026
