ASHAIMAN MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY AND GHANA IRRIGATION AUTHORITY JOIN FORCES TO RESOLVE LAND DISPUTES AND ADVANCE IRRIGATION PROJECTS
The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA), led by Municipal Chief Executive Mr. Freeman Tsekpo, held a strategic meeting with the Ghana Irrigation Authority (GIDA) in Accra. The discussions, which included GIDA CEO Ing. Richard Opong-Boateng and his management team, focused on strengthening cooperation to address persistent land disputes and encroachments on Irrigation Development Authority (IDA) lands in Ashaiman.
These unresolved land issues have posed significant challenges to the expansion of irrigation infrastructure in the area, impeding local agricultural development. A key agenda was accelerating the construction of a critical irrigation canal by FRIDOUG Construction Limited, aimed at boosting farming productivity and supporting community livelihoods.
Hon. Ernest Norgbey, Member of Parliament for the Ashaiman constituency, strongly advocated for the enforcement of existing laws to reclaim IDA lands encroached upon within the municipality. He stressed that firm action is essential to resolve these land conflicts, enabling orderly and sustainable development in the region.
The meeting concluded with the establishment of a joint technical working group comprising officials from both ASHMA and GIDA. This team will undertake detailed site inspections to identify and remove encroachments obstructing the irrigation canal project. Both parties pledged to maintain collaboration and transparent communication to ensure the timely and successful completion of the canal in Ashaiman.
