ASHAIMAN TO END SHIFT SYSTEM AS MCE & MP HAND OVER 1,200 DESKS TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, led by Hon. Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Mr. Freeman Tsekpo, and the Hon. Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman, Dr. Ernest Henry Norgbey, have jointly delivered One Thousand Two Hundred (1,200) pieces of classroom furniture to public basic schools across the municipality.

The donation forms part of the government’s nationwide initiative to improve access to quality education and enhance teaching and learning conditions.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Norgbey commended the government for fulfilling its promise. He noted that the new desks would end the shift system in various schools in the municipality, a challenge that has contributed to absenteeism among pupils.

He disclosed that teachers’ furniture would also be procured, and the initiative will become an annual support to the Municipal Education Directorate. He urged students to maintain the furniture and use it responsibly.

Mr. Tsekpo expressed gratitude to the President and the MP for prioritizing education in Ashaiman. He assured residents of fair distribution across all public schools and explained that the Presbyterian Basic School block, a legacy project, previously had no furniture for pupils. This furniture, he said, would be distributed to pupils to commence learning immediately.

He added that the new desks, made of durable wood and metal, would last longer than the erstwhile wooden ones and should be well-maintained by the beneficiaries.

The Municipal Director of Education, Ms. Gloria Kwakuyi, welcomed the gesture, saying it demonstrates the equal importance placed on all teaching and learning logistics. She confirmed that the shift system at Presbyterian Basic School has ended immediately and expressed hope that it will be fully eradicated in the municipality by the end of the year.

The team also inspected ongoing construction of a new 12-unit classroom block for the municipality, another government-funded project aimed at expanding access to quality education.

The brief ceremony was held at the premises of Presbyterian Basic School and was witnessed by Municipal Co-ordinating Director Ms. Jemima Apedo, Assembly staff, Assembly Members, teachers, and pupils.
