REVIVING AGRICULTURE: ASHAIMAN’S LANDMARK STEP TOWARD FOOD SECURITY

The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly marked a pivotal moment in its agricultural journey on Friday, July 25, 2025, as stakeholders gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony of the left bank Irrigation Development Authority (IDA) Scheme lands development project in Jericho, a suburb of Ashaiman. This transformative initiative, championed by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA), and the Ashaiman Divisional Council, represents a renewed commitment to agricultural modernization and sustainable development in urban fringe communities.

Gracing the occasion were top dignitaries, including the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, the Municipal Chief Executive Freeman Tsekpo, and Nii Annan Adjor, Regent of Ashaiman, who chaired the event. Their presence signalled unified support for a future where agriculture becomes a key driver of local economic growth and social progress. The Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, stated that “the government is poised to engage in irrigation projects to provide all year-round supply of water to farmers across the country and encouraged the local community to take charge of such government projects.” With a firm pledge to protect agricultural lands, the government’s investment in irrigation infrastructure on the IDA lands, he promises to improve productivity, create jobs, and reduce poverty. This initiative offers real prospects for food security and livelihood enhancement in Ashaiman and beyond.
