A REPORT ON CLEAN-UP EXERCISE HELD BY THE ASHAIMAN MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY ON 1ST AND 2ND OCTOBER 2024
A successful community clean-up exercise was held in Ashaiman on 1st and 2nd October 2024, bringing together over 500 volunteers from various community sectors. The event aimed to promote environmental sustainability, foster community engagement, and improve public health. This report highlights the exercise’s objectives, activities, outcomes, and recommendations for future initiatives.
In attendance at this clean-up exercise are the Chief Director, MCE, Assembly Members, Unite Committee, and all heads of Department.
Among other things, it also aims at:
1. Improving environmental cleanliness and good waste management practices.
2. Promoting good public health and safety by reducing the prevalence of waste-related diseases.
3. Instilling a sense of community ownership and responsibility towards environmental stewardship.
4. Strengthening partnerships among national and sub-national government bodies, private sector entities, and community leaders for sustainable waste management.
5. Engaging community members and traditional leaders in a collective effort to address environmental degradation and promote sustainable waste management practices.
6. Conducting a comprehensive clean-up campaign across the 25 Local Government Authorities to remove accumulated waste and debris from public spaces.
7. Facilitating the registration of households for organized waste collection services to ensure proper disposal.
8. Educating residents and institutions on waste management techniques, including sorting and recycling, to promote behavioral change.
As part of sustainability mechanisms, there will be:
*Enforcement of by-laws: Strengthening enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with waste management regulations and deter illegal dumping practices. Persons found culpable will be summoned before the court of law.
Activities:
1. Pre-event sensitization: Flyers, posters, and social media campaigns informed residents about the exercise.
2. Clean-up exercise: Volunteers collected trash, cleared drains, and swept streets.
3. Waste segregation: Collected waste was sorted into recyclable and non-recyclable materials.
4. Public education: Participants distributed educational materials on proper waste disposal.
