LOCAL GOVERNMENT MINISTER’S VISIT TO ASHMA
The Minister of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, Hon Dan Botwe paid a working visit to Ashaiman municipal assembly as part of his visit to three (3) Assemblies in the Greater Accra region on Monday march 14,2022.
The visit he said is to bring decision making closer to the people. Residents of the various communities would also know, see and feel the presence of the government they voted for and enable the government to deliver programmes and service that addressed local needs.
The Minister first met with the management at the office of the Municipal Chief Executive and later interacted with the staff of the Assembly at the New Assembly block. He urged the staff of the assembly operating within local government set up to be involved in the activities and programmes of the assembly to transform Ashaiman in line with the vision of the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo.
He stressed the need for the Assembly to improve on revenue mobilization (Internal Generated Fund) to be able to finance developments in the municipality instead of relying solely on the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
On sensitization drive, the minister tasked the assembly to regularly sensitize residents and engage them at all levels in decision making. When people are well informed on the working of the assembly, they will appreciate the need to pay their property rates and other levies to boost the Internally Generated Fund(IGF) of the assembly, he opined.
On monitoring and evaluation of the assemblies in Ghana, Hon Dan Botwe said the ministry in collaboration with the institute of local service has developed data based system, the district data development platform to monitor, coordinate and track the performance of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon Albert Boakye Okyere thanked the minister and his entourage for the visit and stressed that the visit will help promote popular participation at the local level.
The Minister was accompanied by Mr. Denis Edward Aboagye, Director for Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development at the office of the President and Director in charge of Local Governance and Decentralization Mr. Seth Samuel Passah.
