As part of efforts to promote a clean and healthy environment, SMART Plastic Recycling Limited, in collaboration with the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA), organized an educational programme on waste segregation at source and recycling for students in the municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme, held on Tuesday, 27th October, 2026, at the Ashaiman Cluster of Schools was aimed at sensitizing pupils on proper waste management and the importance of recycling. The schools were presented with segregated bins to aid this initiative and a promise to distribute to approximately all schools within the municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the students, Mr. Sualla Ishaq. CEO of SMART Plastics Limited explained that waste segregation is the process of separating waste materials at source, into different categories based on their nature and how they can be treated or reused, noting that proper separation helps to keep the environment clean, reduce pollution and encourage recycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students were taught four main categories of waste:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Organic Waste: Waste from natural sources that can decompose over time, such as food remains and leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Recyclable Waste: Materials that can be processed into new products, including plastic bottles, plastic chairs and take-away packs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Paper and Can Waste: Old newspapers, books, cardboard, as well as metallic tins, sardine tins and beverage cans which can be melted or recycled into tissue paper and other products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Sachet and Non-Recyclable Waste: Pure water sachets which require special recycling,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students were reminded of non-recyclable materials like used sanitary pads which must be disposed of properly to prevent health hazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team emphasized that SMART Plastic goes beyond waste separation by collecting and processing suitable waste materials and transforming them into useful products. They added that provision of designated plastic bins at vantage points will help promote waste separation at source and make collection and recycling easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key issue raised during the interactive session was how to handle waste materials, such as wood, that do not fall within the designated SMART Plastic bins. The facilitators noted the need for a clear system to handle such waste to prevent indiscriminate mixing and disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme brought together stakeholders in environmental sustainability including SMART Cleaners, Ms. Gloria Kwakuyi, Education Director, Ms. Salvata Koku. NCCE Director, Mr. Vicent Tekper of Uptown Cleaners, Becca Authur Shep Coordinator, all head teachers, teachers and teachers and students of the Ashaiman Cluster of schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organizers emphasized that proper waste segregation is a critical step towards achieving a cleaner environment, reducing choked gutters and curbing air pollution caused by burning of mixed waste. They urged teachers and students to become ambassadors of proper waste management in their schools and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme was described by participants as highly educative and interactive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
